Recycling keeps paper, glass, and plastic out of the landfills. Recycling should be an important part of your home routine, but it can be difficult to stick to. Here are five tips to make recycling easy and effortless:

1. Use recycling equipment.

Home recycling equipment will make it easy to recycle. There are many types of home recycling equipment, including sorting containers, paper shredders, and aluminum can washers and crushers. Automatic aluminum can crushers will save you effort and make cans compact for easy disposal. And some higher priced aluminum crushers also wash the cans. But at the very least, you should have stackable sorting containers.

2. Separate recycling containers.

Place recycling containers and bins where you are most likely to have that particular type of waste. For example, place aluminum and plastic recycling bins in your kitchen. Place paper bins in your home office. Have a couple containers near your front door or in your garage for cardboard and paper so you can easily get rid of junk mail and boxes.

3. Switch to reusable products.

When you can, switch to cloth bags for shopping and use dish towels in place of paper towels. Even if you don't want to make the switch to reusable products, know what to do with the waste. Use plastic shopping bags as liners for small trash cans. If you have a cat, shopping bags are also a convenient way to dispose of litter box waste. If you use paper towels, keep in mind they can be recycled as long as you dry them first.

4. Enroll in curbside pickup.

If your community offers curbside pickup, enroll in the program. Recycling is much easier to stick to when you don't have to drive to a recycling center. Curbside pickups are also easier in that many of these programs don't require you to sort your recyclables. Recyclables are sorted when the trucks drop off the waste. If your community doesn't have curbside pickup, make a deal with your neighbors where you drop off their recycling one week and then they drop off yours the next.

5. Get your kids involved.

Get your kids involved in recycling by giving them their own bins for their rooms. Every day, have them go through their backpacks for paper that can be recycled. Ask your child to rinse out and bring home any plastic bottles or cans they used at school. You can also ask them to help you take lighter bins to the appropriate containers in the garage.
